Man dies after boat carrying 21 migrants is intercepted near San Clemente Island

A 56-year-old man was found unresponsive aboard a boat carrying 21 people that U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection crews intercepted on July 29 more than 70 miles off the Southern California coast, about 14 miles west of San Clemente Island. Coast Guard responders performed CPR and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where staff briefly restored his pulse before he died. The remaining 20 passengers, suspected of entering the country illegally, were detained and transferred to U.S. Border Patrol custody. Authorities have not released the man's identity, nationality, or cause of death.
