Families of People Killed by ICE Tell Congressional Panel of ‘Dual Assassinations’

At a Democratic shadow hearing on September 22 led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Robert Garcia, relatives of Ruben Ray Martinez, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Renée Good, Alex Pretti and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero described how DHS publicly smeared the victims after the shootings. Martinez, 23, shot in March 2025, was the first U.S. citizen killed by ICE in the second Trump administration — a fact Blumenthal said was withheld from his family and the public for nearly a year. Salgado’s sons said DHS claimed there may have been drugs in his vehicle, which testing later proved false. An attorney for Durán Guerrero’s family described “dual assassinations — one of the body and then of the character.”
