Guatemalan Man Dies in Fiery Crash After Fleeing ICE Stop in Grand Rapids

Mario David Coronado Juárez, a 36-year-old Guatemalan father of three, died around 7:10 a.m. on September 20 when his car struck a tree and caught fire near Century Avenue SW in Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids police say he was fleeing ICE agents; DHS says officers “immediately discontinued the enforcement action” and did not chase him, and local reporting indicates he was not the target of the stop. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer directed Michigan State Police to conduct an independent review, and Rep. Hillary Scholten asked ICE for footage and records: “No traffic stop should end with a fatality.” He did not die in ICE custody and is not included in the custody count above.
