U.S. Citizen Injured by ICE Officers in Evanston After Being Mistaken for Their Target

An Evanston resident who is a U.S. citizen suffered injuries to his neck, head and teeth on Sunday, September 20, when ICE officers confronted him near Howard Street and Dodge Avenue because he matched the description of someone they were seeking. After he declined to identify himself he was detained for fingerprinting, then released once officers confirmed he was a citizen and not their target. About three minutes of the encounter were captured on video; officers left as protesters gathered. DHS said the man “was given lawful commands but was not cooperative.” Evanston police are investigating.
