University of Maryland ‘teacher of the year’ detained by ICE in Texas

Berhanu Kibret, an instructor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Pharmacy, was detained by ICE at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on July 21 as he returned from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy conference where he had just received a “Teacher of the Year” award, the Guardian reported. DHS said Kibret, an Ethiopian national, entered the U.S. in June 2021 and overstayed a visa that expired in May 2024; the university said he has valid work authorization and expressed hope the issue would be quickly resolved. Two weeks after his arrest he remained in federal custody at a privately run immigration detention facility in Oklahoma, according to the Baltimore Banner.
