Afghan refugees awaiting resettlement

Trump in Talks to Send Afghans Who Aided U.S. Forces to Congo, Aid Worker Says

April 22, 2026 Qatar → Democratic Republic of Congo Documented / New York Times
As many as 1,100 Afghans — including 400 children — currently held in Qatar after aiding U.S. forces could be sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo rather than resettled in the United States, the New York Times reported. The plan follows the Trump administration’s suspension of the U.S. refugee resettlement program. The Congo transfer would affect wartime allies who had been promised safe harbor in exchange for their service alongside American troops.
