“The ICE Agent Behind Me Grabbed the Back of My Shirt and Just Threw Me Like a Sack of Trash”

August 1, 2026 Newark, NJ Mother Jones
Norma Bowe, a 68-year-old registered nurse and Kean University public health professor, was thrown to the ground by ICE agents outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, where she had brought her mobile health clinic to serve visitors, according to Mother Jones and the ACLU of New Jersey. Her case is among 54 Federal Tort Claims Act claims that ACLU affiliates filed July 29 across 17 states and Washington, D.C., on behalf of people harmed by federal immigration agents. Mother Jones reported the claims also include a pair of cemetery workers who were maced and handcuffed at work after ICE agents broke through a gate to reach them, and a family of six wrongly detained.
