The Deaths ICE Doesn't Count

Investigation anchored in the death of Prisciliano Trejo Ricano, a 29-year-old Mexican-born man who spent his 29th birthday on July 10 inside the privately run Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, where he wrote in a July 12 Facebook post that he felt 'like a number or like a placeholder.' Arrested June 19 in the Durham, N.C., area, he fell gravely ill at Stewart, was hospitalized and diagnosed with an aggressive leukemia in mid-July, and was released from ICE custody while comatose in the hospital; he died July 24 at a hospital in Augusta, Ga. Because ICE released him before he died, his death does not appear in the agency's official in-custody death tally — and the Trump administration has said ICE will no longer be required to publicly report deaths of people who die after being released from custody.
