Surprise ICE Detention Plan Scaled Back from 1,500 Beds to 542
The Trump administration's plan to convert a Surprise, Arizona warehouse into a 1,500-bed ICE detention center has been scaled back to 542 beds amid opposition from state and local officials and review by new Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took over after Kristi Noem's ouster. The original DHS-purchased 418,000-square-foot warehouse sits about 300 yards from residential homes and roughly a mile from a majority-Hispanic high school. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes had previously warned DHS she was weighing a public nuisance suit under state law.
