Reports in mid-January 2026 said a vacant warehouse at 1197 N. 6880 West on Salt Lake City's west side was under consideration for conversion into a 7,500-bed detention facility, drawing a protest at the site on Jan 16 and objections from Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson.

Denied: On Jan 24, 2026, owner the Ritchie Group said it and its investors had “no plans to sell” or lease the property to the federal government, ending the proposal.
