NJ attorney general launches probe into embattled immigration detention center

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced the state has issued investigative subpoenas as part of a civil rights investigation into conditions at Delaney Hall, the GEO Group-run 1,000-bed immigration detention facility in Newark, examining whether GEO employees violated detainees' civil rights, the New Jersey Monitor reported. The probe comes less than a week after the death of Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo, a Salvadoran man whose mother said he was not receiving his daily diabetes and blood pressure medication; she learned of his death on Aug. 1 when a hospital called her to identify his body. The state has confirmed a third detainee death connected to the facility, which has drawn scrutiny since opening in May 2025, and Gov. Mikie Sherrill — who said ICE and GEO have blocked state efforts at a full health inspection — repeated her call for Delaney Hall to close.
