Clearfield County Extends Moshannon Valley Contract as a Sale to the Federal Government Looms

Clearfield County commissioners voted 2-1 on September 22 to extend the county’s intermediary contract for GEO Group’s 1,876-bed Moshannon Valley Processing Center — the largest detention center in the Northeast — to mid-March 2027, amid signs the facility could be sold to the federal government and slip out of local oversight. Commissioner Dave Glass, who voted no, said the warden answered his question about a sale with “I’ll have to refer you to GEO corporate on that,” which he called “a red flag.” About $5 million a month in ICE funding flows through the county. A May congressional visit found 1,417 detainees, roughly 78% without serious criminal charges or violent convictions.
