They Called 911 for Help. Police Sent Them to ICE Detention Instead.

May 11, 2026 Palm Beach County, Florida Marshall Project / Miami Herald 287(g)
As more than 1,100 local law enforcement agencies have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE, routine police interactions are increasingly ensnaring crime victims and 911 callers themselves. In one case profiled, Axel Sanchez Toledo called 911 for a welfare check on his young daughter; when deputies arrived they took his license, tackled and tasered him in front of his girlfriend and infant son, and held him for four months on resisting-arrest charges before turning him over to ICE for deportation despite a pending asylum claim. Other examples include a restaurant employee reporting a burglary and a father involved in a minor fender bender — all detained by ICE after seeking police help.
