Latin Grammy-Winning Cuban Percussionist Detained by ICE at Miami Airport

Degnis Bofill, 39, a Cuban percussionist and composer who won a 2022 Latin Grammy for the folk album “Ancestros Sinfonico,” was detained by ICE at Miami International Airport on August 19 after arriving on a flight from New York, where he had attended the Latin Alternative Music Conference and performed in Manhattan. Bofill has a pending asylum case; ICE said he entered the country legally in April 2023 but later failed to comply with the terms of his admission. He was held at the Miramar ICE office for several days before being transferred to the Krome Detention Center.
