Illinois woman with green card has been detained by ICE for 12 months. Her daughters plead for her release.

Beata Siemionkowicz, a green-card holder from Poland, has been in ICE custody since August 2, 2025, when agents arrested her while she was gardening in her daughter's Des Plaines backyard, according to the Chicago Tribune. ICE is using two decades-old misdemeanor retail theft arrests, from 2005 and 2011, as grounds for her detention. She spent her first night in Kentucky's Campbell County Detention Center in a cell with black mold on the air vents and dead bedbugs in the corners; her daughters, ages 25 and 21, have taken over payments on her Des Plaines home and her legal costs, with one putting her nursing studies on hold, while lawyers press her appeals in immigration court and seek alternatives to detention.
