ICE Responds to Reports of Medical and Staffing Failures — Miami Correctional Facility, IN

In a July 23 letter responding to an inquiry from Rep. André Carson, acting ICE Director David Venturella provided new details on conditions at the Indiana state prison contracted to hold immigration detainees. Over a 22-day period in April, 760 doses of medication went unadministered — attributed to detainees refusing to come to the pill line, low blood sugar, or being in court — and another 44 doses were missed because the medication was unavailable. Venturella declined to give staffing totals, citing “operational sensitivity and security,” and said all alert systems “were and are operational” despite Carson’s concerns about a non-functioning emergency intercom. The facility, under contract since October, has not yet received a compliance inspection from ICE’s detention oversight office. The ACLU of Indiana filed suits this week over alleged medical neglect and mistreatment there.
