Death Rate in ICE Detention More Than Doubles Under Trump, Reuters Analysis Finds

June 17, 2026 Nationwide Reuters
A Reuters analysis found the death rate in ICE detention has more than doubled under the Trump administration — roughly one death for every 1,630 people held, up from one per 3,848 detainees averaged from 2009 through 2024. At least 50 people have died in immigration detention since the mass-deportation campaign began in January 2025; 21 were found already dead or unresponsive, including 10 suicides. Three independent experts who reviewed ICE records and autopsies said the figures point to deteriorating supervision and medical care as detention populations ballooned. The analysis drew on records obtained through public-records requests and processed by the Vera Institute of Justice.
