ICE detains Venezuelan man who had been released on humanitarian parole to donate kidney to brother

José Gregorio González, a Venezuelan man who donated a kidney to his brother in August 2025 after ICE granted him a year of humanitarian parole, was taken back into custody on July 21 during a routine check-in with immigration authorities in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune and NBC News. ICE first arrested González in March 2025 as he accompanied his brother — a Cicero resident with end-stage kidney failure — to dialysis; public pressure, including from Illinois senators and Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García, won his parole on April 4, 2025 so the transplant could proceed. The Resurrection Project says González has no criminal record, and his attorney, Peter Meinecke, is preparing a new humanitarian parole request.
