ICE Agent Castro Freed on Bail After First Minnesota Court Appearance in Shooting Case

Christian Castro, the ICE agent who shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis through the closed front door of a north Minneapolis home on January 14, appeared in Hennepin County District Court on September 17 — the first time Minnesota prosecutors got him before a state judge, after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott refused for months to sign extradition paperwork. Judge Paul R. Scoggin set bail at $200,000 with conditions including electronic monitoring, surrender of his passport and a signed extradition waiver, and Castro was released that evening; he faces four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime. A day later he appeared in federal court in St. Paul, pleading not guilty to six counts of making false statements to the FBI and drawing a $75,000 bond with a curfew and a mental health evaluation.
