A Government Accountability Office report released June 9, 2026 found that Camp East Montana — the soft-sided detention camp erected at Fort Bliss in August 2025 to hold up to 5,000 people, the largest immigrant detention facility in the country — wasted millions in federal funding and “did not meet key detention standards, risking the safety and security of detained noncitizens and staff.” The camp has recorded tuberculosis cases and at least four detainee deaths, one ruled a homicide by the local coroner. The report, requested by congressional Democrats, is among the first independent investigations of facilities built with the $170 billion in enforcement and detention funding enacted in July 2025.
