From New Jersey to Georgia, the Detainee Deaths That ICE Does Not Count

ICE dropped a Biden-era rule that required the agency to review and report all detainee fatalities, including deaths that occur within 30 days of release from custody. Because a detainee who is administratively released to a hospital before dying is no longer technically in custody, the agency is not required to identify the person or issue a public notification — keeping the official death count low. At least three deaths have been tied to Delaney Hall in Newark, including one the agency has still not publicly acknowledged.
