ACLU Report: Agents Detained Nursing Mothers, New Parents and Children Alongside Adults

The same ACLU review documented enforcement against families with infants and medically vulnerable children. In Louisiana, ICE detained two mothers at routine check-ins and deported them to Honduras with their children within days — three of the children, ages 2, 4 and 7, were U.S. citizens; one mother was pregnant and one child had a rare cancer, and ICE deported the child without medication or a chance for doctors to advise on care. In Florida, a mother was deported to Cuba two days after a moved-up check-in appointment, separating her from her still-nursing 1-year-old U.S.-citizen daughter; her husband reported the separation was so sudden the baby was taken to the hospital. After a Guatemalan woman gave birth in Border Patrol custody at an Arizona medical center, she was told she faced immediate deportation and would have to decide whether to take her U.S.-citizen newborn with her. The report also counted 19 pregnant or nursing people among those detained or targeted.
