ICE agents took a 76-year-old Indonesian man into custody outside the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Center after he showed up to testify as a witness, the latest in a string of courthouse arrests that advocates say is deterring immigrants from participating in the legal system. “How can we call ourselves a ‘Welcoming City’ when people have to choose between taking part in a legal process and getting home safe?” one advocate said. Over 100 immigrants have reportedly been arrested in this way in the past year.
