At New York City's immigration court for detained children on Wednesday, dozens of minors detained by ICE — those who gave their ages were as young as 11 — appeared before Judge Lisa Ling, most without lawyers and few with any adult to speak for them. One boy, Diego, represented himself and told the judge 'I don't know how to do it' when asked to fill out an asylum application in English; he repeatedly said he was afraid to return to Guatemala in his native K'iche', relayed through two interpreters. The hearings come as the Trump administration allowed a $200 million federal contract providing lawyers for more than 24,000 unaccompanied minors nationwide to expire.
