‘New Terrifying Levels’: 10 People Fatally Shot by Immigration Officials in Trump’s Second Term
The killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston brings to 10 the number of people fatally shot by immigration officials during the current administration, according to a Guardian review of enforcement deaths. Salgado Araujo, 52, left home early Tuesday with a meal his wife had prepared, picked up three co-workers in his white van, and was headed to a construction site when officers conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” shot him. Civil rights advocates say the pattern of shootings during vehicle stops — several justified with disputed claims that drivers used cars as weapons — has reached “new terrifying levels” with little independent accountability.
