Raleigh woman claims inadequate care after she says father suffered stroke in ICE custody

Gabriel Lasanda Johnson, a 55-year-old Liberian-born man who has lived in the United States with legal status since age 15, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his left side while in ICE custody in Texas, according to his Raleigh-area daughter, WRAL reported. Johnson was detained in mid-July over what the family was told was a misunderstanding around a missed immigration appointment; his daughter said in a social media post shared more than 100,000 times that he was denied consistent food, water and his stroke medication for 16 days before being taken to a Texas hospital. The office of U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee, D-N.C., said it is actively working to have him released from ICE custody; a request for an emergency stay of removal was denied.
