Phoenix Sushi Restaurant Owner Kelly Yu on Being Detained by ICE for 8 Months

NPR’s Ayesha Rascoe interviews Kelly Yu, a Hong Kong-born owner of three Phoenix-area restaurants who has lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years. Yu says she was detained after a May 2025 check-in at the Phoenix ICE office and held about eight and a half months in total, while her U.S.-citizen daughter and local supporters across the political spectrum campaigned for her release. She says her future remains uncertain.
