San Diego Padres Minor-League Staffer Detained by ICE at El Paso Airport

Oswaldo Pirela, 34, the San Diego Padres’ minor-league catching coordinator, remained in federal immigration custody after being detained at an El Paso, Texas, airport while returning from a work trip, the Guardian reported. Pirela’s family said the Venezuelan national has a pending asylum claim and has continually renewed his work authorization. The Department of Homeland Security said he faces removal proceedings.
