‘What They’re Doing Qualifies as Torture’: New Details of ICE Force-Feeding Revealed

The Guardian identified individual hunger strikers among the ten cases in which ICE sought to impose involuntary medical procedures: an Afghan man force-fed for months in Texas, a Ukrainian man with mental health problems in Florida whose force-feeding was halted only when his attorney intervened, and a Saudi Arabian woman who was hospitalized during a hunger strike in Louisiana and broke it in Texas as the procedure loomed. In six of the ten cases the detained person had no legal representation during the court proceedings that authorized the treatment, and most records remain sealed. Medical and immigrant rights experts warned that the practice will expand as ICE detains more people nationwide.
