Mexico Asks US State Attorneys General to Criminally Investigate Immigrant Deaths Involving ICE

July 15, 2026 Nationwide The Guardian / AP Accountability
Mexico formally asked US state attorneys general — and, in a parallel request, the Justice Department — to criminally investigate the deaths of Mexican immigrants in ICE custody or during raids, following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Since the start of the Trump administration’s second term, 17 Mexican immigrants have died during immigration enforcement: 14 in ICE custody and 3 in agency operations. Mexico is also sending cease-and-desist letters to detention centers where Mexicans died, beginning with Adelanto in California, as a first step toward civil lawsuits against the operators.
