Democrats Call Mesa ICE Facility a ‘Public Health Issue’ After Finding Overflowing Toilets, No Medical Care
After a second unannounced oversight visit, Reps. Yassamin Ansari and Greg Stanton said they remain alarmed by conditions at the ICE holding facility in Mesa, Arizona, where cells were still overcrowded and where they learned that toilets “regularly overflow.” The lawmakers described the site as a “public health issue,” reporting that detainees were being held without adequate medical care. The visit adds to a mounting record of overcrowding and use-of-force complaints at the Mesa-Gateway hold rooms.
