Rogerio da Silva Lima and his 15-year-old son, Nycolas, Brazilian residents of Martha’s Vineyard, were detained by the U.S. Coast Guard while fishing offshore and transferred to ICE custody. The Coast Guard approached three times demanding documentation; Nycolas was reportedly so panicked he could not spell his name, and officers shackled the teen’s feet when they came to transport him. Both are being held at an immigration facility in Burlington, Massachusetts, and face possible transfer to Texas. Lawyers filed an emergency habeas petition, and a federal judge ordered that the father not be removed from the U.S. without 72 hours’ notice.
