Kilmar Abrego Garcia Fights Deportation to Liberia After Criminal Charges Dropped
A federal judge on May 22 dismissed the human-smuggling case against Kilmar Abrego Garcia, finding the Justice Department’s prosecution “presumptively vindictive” retaliation for his challenge to his mistaken 2025 deportation to El Salvador. Despite the dismissal, the administration has moved to deport the Maryland resident to Liberia; he is now asking a federal judge to block his removal to any country other than Costa Rica, which has agreed to accept him as a refugee.
