ICE Transfers Hundreds Out of the Tacoma Detention Center to Other States

August 29, 2026 Tacoma, WA The Seattle Times Transfers
Roughly 360 people were boarded onto five ICE-chartered planes leaving King County International Airport between Tuesday and Friday, according to preliminary counts from the county's flight monitor and the activist group La Resistencia. Advocates warned the transfers cut people off from their lawyers and families and reduce their chances of release on bond, and noted that many of those moved had upcoming hearings in Tacoma's immigration court. The facility was not overfull — it held about 1,460 people against a capacity of roughly 1,600 in mid-August — and ICE did not explain the transfers.
