After Lawsuit, ICE Pauses Construction of Bay Area Detention Facility — Gilroy, CA
The federal government agreed to voluntarily pause construction of a planned ICE facility near Gilroy until September 9, after California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County sued in June arguing the leased land is zoned exclusively for agriculture and that required notification and procedural steps were skipped. State and local officials believe the site would hold up to 150 people at a time for short-term detention; ICE denies it would be a detention center. The lawsuit remains ongoing, with a hearing set for October 7.
