Bad Food. Poor Care. No Toilets. ICE Detention Misery Pushes Immigrants to ‘Voluntarily’ Depart
Detainees at ICE’s Delaney Hall facility in Newark are refusing meals over spoiled food, inadequate medical care, and unsanitary housing, while those at the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona describe solitary confinement being used to coerce people into abandoning their asylum claims. As evidence of poor conditions mounts, “voluntary” departures — in which detainees surrender their due process rights to leave the country — have risen sevenfold.
