ICE Is Building a ‘Hard-Sided’ Detention Facility at New York’s Largest Detention Center
ICE is adding 100 beds to the 650-bed Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia but won’t say what its “hard-sided” expansion will look like — former DHS officials say the term could mean anything from a conventional building to a tent with cinderblock walls on a concrete base. The expansion comes as a new state law bars counties from contracting with ICE, which had been holding as many as 250 people a day in New York county jails.
