ICE Detains Catholic Nun Walking to Mass in McAllen; Released After Lawmakers Intervene
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained Sister Leticia “Letty” Ugboaja — a 56-year-old Catholic nun from Nigeria who has worked as a registered nurse in South Texas for about a decade — as she walked to Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen. She was handcuffed and told she was being transferred to an ICE detention facility in Raymondville, and was not allowed to retrieve needed medication, before being released later that day after South Texas members of Congress intervened. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville called the circumstances “wildly disturbing,” and LULAC demanded an investigation into the arrest.
