Federal Agents Make Unannounced Visits to Legal Aid Groups Representing Immigrant Children
ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations and Health and Human Services agents made unannounced June visits to DC-area legal aid nonprofits — Kids in Need of Defense, Amica, and Ayuda — that represent unaccompanied immigrant children, requesting documents and financial records without warrants or subpoenas. The groups declined and describe the visits as intimidation; several say the government owes them millions in unpaid reimbursements. Unaccompanied children are now detained and deported at roughly three times the rate of the first Trump administration, according to Human Rights Watch.
