Federal Appeals Court Rules Detained Immigrants Are Entitled to Bond Hearings Within 90 Days
A 2-1 panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled on July 2 that people facing immigration detention have meaningful due-process rights and must be given a bond hearing within 90 days — a major blow to the administration’s policy of holding immigrants indefinitely without hearings. The case stems from the detention of three longtime Texas residents; the Trump administration had argued they did not deserve bond hearings because the government intends to deport them.
