Exiled Nicaraguan Journalist Luis Galeano Detained by ICE in Florida
ICE agents pulled over veteran Nicaraguan journalist Luis Galeano on Monday, September 14, shortly after he began driving for Lyft in Florida. Galeano fled Nicaragua in December 2018, days after police raided his outlet, 100% Noticias, and issued an order for his arrest; the Ortega-Murillo government stripped him of citizenship in 2023, and his asylum application has been pending for about seven years, according to his wife, Daykel Santamaría, who said he also has a work permit. As of September 16 he was held at the Krome detention center in Miami, with an immigration court date on October 2. Florida Republican Reps. María Elvira Salazar and Mario Díaz-Balart publicly objected to his detention, and the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Inter American Press Association called for his release.
