They Were Detained by ICE. Then They Vanished.

June 1, 2026 Portland, Maine Mother Jones Detention Transfers
Abdullahi Mohamed, a Somali cab driver who had checked in with ICE for more than two decades under an order of supervision and had no criminal record, vanished into the detention system for about five days last December after being detained near Portland, Maine — then was transferred repeatedly across the country faster than his family could track him. A Marshall Project investigation found that rapid, serial transfers have surged under the Trump administration: the number of detainees moved five or more times more than tripled, and those shipped out of state within 24 hours more than doubled.
