'Complete discomfort, little space': ICE detainees in Mississippi complain of crowding as arrests skyrocket

Detainees at the CoreCivic-run Adams County Correctional Center in Natchez, Mississippi — for years one of the largest ICE facilities in the country — say the facility has become so crowded that officials are placing three people in roughly 8-by-10-foot cells designed for two and detainees are sleeping on makeshift beds and plastic "boat" platforms on the floor, according to reporting by Mississippi Today's Mukta Joshi in partnership with The New York Times. Nearly 70 detainees signed a complaint letter to the warden saying the third person in each cell must sleep with his head next to the toilet. ICE figures published in early July put the facility's average population this fiscal year at 1,878, and detainees estimate it has recently crossed 2,000, approaching CoreCivic's stated capacity of 2,232; a CoreCivic spokesman said every detainee is provided a bed.
