Colorado inspection law unfairly singles out ICE detention center, operator's lawyers say

Lawyers for the GEO Group asked U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Domenico to block House Bill 26-1276, a new Colorado law requiring more frequent health and safety inspections at contractor-run immigration detention centers and allowing civil penalties for noncompliance, Colorado Newsline reported. GEO, which operates Colorado's only immigration detention center in Aurora under an ICE contract, argued the law is discriminatory because it effectively targets a single facility; state lawyers countered that only the inspection provisions are in effect and that GEO has historically faced fewer required inspections than state prisons and county jails. The litigation coincides with GEO and ICE refusing to comply with an Adams County Health Department order tied to a confirmed tuberculosis case at the facility, with federal officials denying local public health inspectors access to complete a legally required investigation.
