Churchill teen, father released from Dilley ICE detention
Emely Charloth Suaza Chambo, a 16-year-old Churchill High School student, was detained by an ICE agent on July 12 while on her way to a San Antonio church with a friend. According to U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, ICE told her father, Fernando Suaza Ortiz, a Hilton Garden Inn worker, to retrieve his daughter or she would be transferred out of state — and when he arrived at the facility to pick her up, he was detained too. Father and daughter were held at CoreCivic's South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley until their release, announced August 4 by Castro, who has campaigned to close the facility. 'I am glad that she is back with her mom, little brothers and the rest of her family,' Castro said.
