Andrea Pedro-Francisco, a 23-year-old asylum seeker who had pleaded for treatment of a large ovarian cyst since her February arrest by immigration agents in Minnesota, was unexpectedly released from a Texas detention center. “It was a shock,” she said in a statement shared by her attorney, recounting that ICE abruptly told her she would be freed. Her case had drawn attention as an example of delayed and denied medical care in ICE custody.
