All Detainees Transferred Out of ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ DHS Says — Everglades, FL

June 17, 2026 Ochopee, Florida PBS NewsHour Facility Closure
All detainees held at “Alligator Alcatraz,” the state-run immigration detention camp on an isolated airstrip in the Florida Everglades, have been transferred to other facilities, the Department of Homeland Security said, citing hurricane-season concerns. ICE declined to specify how many people were moved or where they were sent. Environmental and civil-rights groups that have fought the site over detainee mistreatment and damage to the surrounding wetlands welcomed the move but are pressing for its permanent closure.
