Allan Marrero Freed From ICE Detention Five Months After Arrest
Allan Marrero was released from immigration detention on Tuesday after five months in custody, reuniting with his husband Matthew at Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village. ICE had refused to release him on a bond he won in immigration court in January until his attorney, Alex Rizio, filed a federal lawsuit accusing the agency of violating congressional law by holding him anyway. “I think when they saw our lawsuit, they realized that they would lose in federal court and let him out,” Rizio told Documented. Marrero’s residency case continues; his most recent attempt to win permanent status was cut short by a temporary immigration judge from Indiana.
